The dilution effect: Conversational basis and witness reliability
نویسندگان
چکیده
The dilution effect occurs when the introduction of nondiagnostic information lessens the impact on reasoning of diagnostic information despite having no relevance to the hypothesis in question. While the effect has been reproduced in several studies, the psychological basis of the effect remains unclear. Some believe it to be conversational while others believe it to be cognitive and social. The paper tests the conversational basis of the effect by minimising pragmatic, conversational influence. To this end, it makes use of a legal setting with witness testimonies. The studies replicate the dilution effect, which suggests that the basis of the results in the original studies is not conversational. However, the credibility of the source strongly influences whether or not the effect occurs. If reliable sources provide the non-diagnostic information, the effect lessens. Conversely, if unreliable sources provide the non-diagnostic information, we observe a stronger dilution effect.

Pragmatics moves away from the word level and sentence level study of language towards the study of language in real-world context and at discourse level whereby two or more participants take part in conversation. There are moments when the speaker explicitly says something but the listener may have other interpretations and inferences from their statements. The aim of this study was to demonst...

Saul (2002) criticizes a view on the relationship between speaker meaning and conversational implicatures according to which speaker meaning is exhaustively comprised of what is said and what is implicated. In the course of making her points, she develops a couple of new notions which she calls “utterer-implicature” and “audience-implicature”. She then makes certain claims about the relationshi...

متن کاملThe witness set of coexistence of quantum effects and its preservers
One of unsolved problems in quantum measurement theory is to characterize coexistence of quantum effects. In this paper, applying positive operator matrix theory, we give a mathematical characterization of the witness set of coexistence of quantum effects and obtain a series of properties of coexistence. We also devote to characterizing bijective morphisms on quantum effects leaving the witness...
